I only come here when I'm frustrated!
But I've been busy and having fun.

Ive been traveling all over and havent been on line too much!

I did finish my fourth year teaching.
I'm halfway done with my masters program.
I spent a week in England in may sightseeing and playing some shows
I spent three weeks on a trip to canada that also featured a great two night stay in Chelan Washington to check out all of the wineries and pretty lake.
I'm now in Washington DC for the National Educators Association conference. Pretty interesting over all... lots of sightseeing tomorrow and then having to figure out what I'm doing on the 4th of July in Washington DC.

    BIG FISH update
Though I didn't think my kids were as into it as usual, this was the first year I can remember that students came in saying "my friend told me I might cry" and other obvious discussion outside of the room.

Plus, nice touch, a former student just told me that it's his favorite movie.

    :)

    Watching BIG FISH in class
We're watching BIG FISH this week.. Oh man, i love this movie. It's crazy how after seeing it so many times (i teach it every year), I still notice new things and make new connections.

I really enjoy the students making discoveries and sharing their ideas.

What a great movie. Today is the last part... oh man, the ending still gets me. How beautiful.

Though we had a good discussion yesterday, my kids aren't laughing as much at the silly parts and don't seem to be diving in as in previous years.

    Bummer...

It is nice to be able to force things i like on other people :)

Its really interesting how light hearted, colorful, and romantic this movie is for a Burton movie. It is his style, but it so isn't.

Its also kind of fun because Burton went to my school.

The kids mostly just dig that Miley Cyrus is in it for three seconds.

An update on me- music and such
    Hey friends,

As you well know, music is a big part of my life- so as some things are changing, I wanted to update you on what I’m up to.

First and foremost, my pride and joy LOVERLEE will be taking a few months off until summer or so. Our last show before the hiatus is happening THIS SUNDAY at Mr. T’s Bowl in Highland Park. It is 21+ and FREE! We play at 9:30 with some other cool local bands. It would really mean a lot to me if you came out and supported us. You can also get our CDs in a bunch of places including Backside Records and iTunes. For a full rundown of where to get it check out http://www.loverleemusic.com/buy.html I recommend getting the CD directly from us via paypal… I’ll give you a free one on Sunday!

In the meantime, I’ve begun performing with two other bands.

I’ve unofficially joined THE BENTLEYS as percussionist. I played my first show with them last month and we had a blast. They’ve been friends of mine for many years and play some great rock and roll! My next show with them is tomorrow nigh at Three Clubs around 10pm. I’m pretty sure it is a free show. I will also be joining them onstage at The Viper Room (not a free show) on Sunday before heading to Highland Park with Loverlee.

Most recently, I’m also pleased to tell you that I’ve officially joined SUPER KARMA as drummer. They are a really neat band that I’m just getting started with. They are a group of really talented people playing great soundingsongs with a variety of instruments. My first show with them is a private party, but you can catch my second show with them on April 11th at Talking Stick as well as many shows afterward- including a trip overseas!

I’m really excited about these new opportunities and getting to perform much more. I hope to see you at the shows and thank all of my friends for their support over the many years of getting on stage.

    Over and out,
    Your friend,
    Justin

PS- in non-music life, I'm still teaching and loving it as well as working on my masters degree and hating it.

Last night, the choir teacher at my school emailed me and said "could you play drums on a song for the concert coming up? I know it is late notice... I'll play piano on the song too. I'll give you a copy of it tomorrow."

So i get the CD expecting some silly Jonas Bros song or something... but no

    "Silver Lining" by Rilo Kiley.

    What a trip.

    Hey friends,

We can use your help to tell other people about us. Beyond just telling your friends about our songs, you could help us by writing a review of our CDs or the band in general. This would be so helpful!

Search for us on iTunes and CDBaby- our CD is available at both sites- and write our customer review! It would mean a lot to us and help us explain our sound to others!

    Thank you!

So.. geez.. Lots of Heath on my friends page.

All I have to add is that I saw that Batman preview last Friday and was AMAZED at Joker for the miliseconds he was on screen. I think that Heath's last role is an amazing one and that is a good thing. He seems absolutely insane and unique in a role we've all seen. Incredible

    Note from a student
    Dear Mr. Riner,

You are a great teacher. You have fun while getting your point across to the students. Students like your class, but you look weird when you don't shave. I hope you teach kids until you retire and live happily until you die.

Something so wrong writing a second LJ entry at 4:30 am
I bet you're all really sad you missed my poem about trying to get to sleep cause I had a dream that spurred my concious brain to work too much.

I woke up an hour ago after a weird dream. I laid in bed for an hour. Totally can't sleep. I'm wide awake. I'm torn about trying getting back in bed and trying for another hour or two before getting up or just staying up now and doing something productive.

I hope you are all bundled up warm.

    My 2007 questions and answers
    1) Where did you begin 2007?
ON STAGE WITH THE FLAMING LIPS! Oh yes! I crashed the stage and danced around while they played one of my favorite songs of all time!

    2) What was your status by Valentine's Day?
    Confused

    3) Were you in school?
Well, I teach... but as a teacher. However, by the end of the year I was doing my Master Degree

    4) How did you earn your money?
Sympathetic older divorcees. Or from my job as an 8th grade teacher

    5) Did you have to go to the hospital?
To visit my grandmother and brother

    6) Did you have any encounters with the police?
I got a speeding ticket in the middle of Oregan where the highway went from 70 to 50 for one mile.

    7) Where did you go on holiday?
A bunch of places. I'm good at weekend getaways

    8) What did you purchase that was over $1000?

    9) Did you know anybody who got married?
I went to two weddings in two days! Yikes!

    10) Did you know anybody who passed away?
Not personally, but when a student at your school dies, you certainly feel like you knew him.

    12) Did you move anywhere?
    Nope. I love my apartment.

    14) What concerts/shows did you go to?
Way too many to list. I did go to KROQ's Acoustic Xmas and it was so much fun. Great bands! But, yeah, tons of concerts besides that. I saw Arcade Fire FOUR times.

    15) Are you registered to vote?
    Yup. And currently undecided.

    16) Who did you want to win Big Brother?
Is that still on? Talk about a question that doesn't fit

I don't know if there was anything big- but a few surprises along the way.

    20) What has been your favorite moment?
I can't think of one in particular- but the Loverlee release show was so much fun. What a blast.

    21) What's something you learned about yourself?
I actually have a really long and complicated answer to this from the past month or so that I don't feel like sharing.

    22) Any new additions to your family?
My cousin was married (though I was unable to go), does that count?

23.) What was your best month?
    September?

24.) What music will you remember 2007 by?
The new Arcade Fire record... the new Loverlee CD ;)

The gifts that my family and friends see fit for me are so funny... there is always an aspect of teenage girl in my taste it's almost embarrassing... so alongside my new drum and wrench set, I also got:

**Stargirl journal (my brother knows I won't really use it... but it does complete the set)
**"Well-behaved Women Seldom Make History" by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich(feminist lit always pops up, though I've stopped identifying myself as such for a while now)
    and the kicker-
**"My So-Called Life" the complete series

    Ticketmaster blows
    ticketmaster blows!
So, I went to buy two $15 tickets. Thirty bucks.

    Until you add:
Building Facility- 2.00 x2 (what is that anyway? Do I own part of the building?)
    Convienice fee- 5.45 x 2
    Order Processing fee- 4.85

Which turns out to basically TWENTY DOLLARS for the convienince of ordering a product?

That is so rediculous. I wish more bands were with Pearl Jam ten years ago. And I fear that it is only going to get worse as recorded music becomes cheaper, live music will become more important and the only way to really make money on music.

    sigh
